Zapier pricing: one task pool, and what multiplies against it

Zapier pricing charges for tasks, and as of 2026 it charges for everything in tasks. AI steps, code, MCP and the SDK were folded onto the same unit, so there is no separate AI credit pool to reason about. What replaced it is a multiplier system: the same action costs one, three or five tasks depending on which model tier runs it, and the tools that model calls multiply too.

Key takeaways

  • Paid plans start at $19.99 a month for Professional and $69 for Team billed yearly, or $29.99 and $103.50 billed monthly, with task volume chosen separately from 100 to 2 million a month.

  • Every product draws from one shared task pool, with no per-product budgets.

  • AI steps multiply by model tier: Standard 1x, Advanced 3x, Premium 5x.

  • Hitting your limit moves you to pay-as-you-go automatically rather than stopping your workflows.

What Zapier actually meters

A task is a step that completes. Every step in a Zap and every external connector call consumes tasks, and the rate varies by what ran.

The AI multipliers are the part worth learning, because they compound:

Task cost = (1 × model rate) + (tool calls × model rate)

The model rate is 1x for Standard, 3x for Advanced and 5x for Premium. So a Premium AI step that makes three tool calls costs (1 × 5) + (3 × 5) = 20 tasks, not one. An Advanced step with no tools costs 3.

The default matters here. New AI steps on a paid plan default to the Premium tier at 5x, so the most expensive multiplier is the one you get unless you go and change it. Standard at 1x doesn't support tool calls at all. Bringing your own API key drops the step back to 1x, and Zapier says so on the same page, but only on Advanced and Premium models.

Code by Zapier runs at 1 task per execution on standard runtime and costs more if you extend the runtime. Connector type also shifts the rate.

Polling for new data does not consume tasks. Only completed actions do.

How the shared pool works

There is one allocation and everything draws on it. Zap workflows, AI steps, code, MCP and the SDK all spend from the same monthly task count, with no separate budgets by product.

That is a deliberate reversal of how most platforms in this index handle AI features, which is to bolt on a second currency. Zapier had exactly that and removed it. The upside is one number to watch. The downside is that a single misconfigured Premium AI step with tool access can eat a month's automation budget, because the AI work and the plumbing compete for the same pool.

Higher task tiers carry a lower cost per task, so the effective rate improves as volume grows rather than staying flat.

What happens when you hit the limit

You keep running and start paying. Reaching your task limit switches the account to pay-as-you-go automatically, unless you turn that off or move up a tier. Zapier describes this as risk-free pricing, and in fairness it does prevent broken automations, which is the failure mode that actually costs a business money.

Turning pay-as-you-go off restores a hard stop, so the control exists. It is opt-out rather than opt-in, which is worth knowing before a runaway Zap finds it.

Flexprice’s Take

Zapier did the harder thing and collapsed its AI pricing back into the unit customers already understood, rather than minting a second currency.

A task already had a decade of customer intuition behind it, which is why folding AI onto it was the right call. Minting AI credits alongside it would have handed every buyer two budgets and an exchange rate, and almost nobody else in this index resisted that.

The multiplier stacks in a way the pricing page doesn't show you. A Premium step with three tool calls costs twenty tasks, and you'll find that in a help-centre article and do the arithmetic yourself. New AI steps default to Premium at 5x, the dearest tier on offer, so the gap between a naive estimate and a real bill is wide.

Auto-enrolling you into pay-as-you-go is defensible for automation, where a stopped workflow is the expensive outcome. It should still be opt-in.

Best For

Teams that already think in tasks and want AI usage on the same meter.

Watch Out For

Premium AI steps with tool access, where one step can cost twenty tasks.
