Replit pricing: effort-based agent billing explained

Replit pricing gives you a subscription that converts into a dollar allowance, then spends that allowance on agent work priced by effort. Core is $20 a month and includes $20 towards models. Pro is $100 and includes $100. The unusual part is the unit. Replit does not bill per message or per token at the surface. It bills per checkpoint, and a checkpoint costs more when the work behind it was harder.

Key takeaways

  • Core is $20 a month and Pro is $100, and each includes credits equal to its price.

  • Agent work bills per checkpoint, priced by the effort a request took rather than a flat rate.

  • Replit asks for confirmation before any paid action starts, so effort pricing never fires silently.

  • Third-party model calls are billed at the provider's public API rate and deducted from the same credits.

What Replit actually meters

Replit meters a checkpoint. A checkpoint happens when the Agent finishes work on your request and implements the functionality in your code, and Replit bills one per request rather than one per intermediate step.

Effort-based pricing then sets what that checkpoint costs. Simple requests like a bug fix or a small change cost less. A complex build such as a full feature or an integration bundles into a single checkpoint that costs more, reflecting total effort. Replit describes bundling as a way to cut billing noise, and it does, though it also means the price of a request is not knowable before you make it.

Two details matter beyond the headline unit. Plan Mode can perform billable reasoning on the paid path even when it changes no code, so thinking bills as well as building. And Agent capabilities that call third-party APIs behind the scenes, including Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini, are billed at the provider's public API rate and deducted from the same credit balance. Replit handles those integrations without asking for API keys, so the pass-through is invisible unless you check the usage dashboard.

Replit does not publish a rate card mapping effort levels to prices. It publishes an interactive demo instead.

How credits work

Credits are denominated in dollars, which removes the usual translation problem between an abstract unit and money. A $20 Core subscription carries $20 of credit.

Core subscribers receive monthly credits. Pro subscribers receive tiered monthly credits that roll over for two months. All subscribers get a one-time allocation of free Agent checkpoints when they start.

The same balance covers more than the Agent. Published apps, storage and databases draw from it too, so a deployed project consumes credit while you are not working.

Free Mode is the pressure valve. Core and Pro subscribers get no-cost everyday Agent work inside a Free Mode allowance, and Replit positions it as the default for routine work with paid modes reserved for heavier builds.

What happens when you hit the limit

Replit asks first. Before a paid action starts, the product requests confirmation, which makes effort-based pricing consent-driven rather than silent. Once credits are spent, usage continues on a paid basis rather than blocking.

Spend controls live in Account then Billing, where you can set usage limits, budgets and alerts. Per-checkpoint costs show in the Agent tab by hovering the usage icon, and the usage dashboard carries the current period in detail.

Starter accounts hit a daily cap on Agent chat and Free Mode instead.

How Replit's pricing has changed across all these years

Replit has reworked Agent pricing twice and runs a Billing section in its weekly changelog.

Flexprice’s Take

Denominating credits in dollars is the best decision on this page, and effort pricing is the riskiest.

A $20 plan that carries $20 of credit is the best decision on this page. Core does exactly that, and it removes the arithmetic every other credit system makes you do.

Asking before it spends is the other thing Replit gets right. The product requests confirmation before any paid action starts, which answers the main objection to variable pricing.

Effort pricing still leaves you guessing. It replaced a flat $0.25 per checkpoint, which was unfair but perfectly predictable, with something fairer nobody can forecast. There's no published effort rate card, so you can't turn a backlog into a monthly number, and a per-request prompt won't do it for you. Replit handed every affected member $10 in credits in July 2025, which tells you how the switch landed.

Best For

Builders who want spend visible at the moment of each decision.

Watch Out For

Teams that need to forecast a quarter, not approve a request.
