HeyGen pricing: the per-minute rate depends on which avatar you pick
HeyGen pricing sells a monthly credit balance, and a finished minute of video costs 4 to 48 credits depending on which avatar engine renders it. The pricing page never shows that rate card. The help centre publishes all of it. Prices read in USD on 9 October 2026.
Key takeaways
A minute costs 4 credits on Avatar III Video Look, 16 on Avatar IV Photo Look, 31 on Avatar IV Video Look and 48 on Avatar V, so the engine sets the price, not the minute.
Creator's 600 credits for $29 buy 19 minutes of Avatar IV Video Look or 150 minutes of Avatar III Video Look from the same balance.
Credits roll over one extra cycle on monthly plans and accumulate to renewal on annual, but lapse the moment a subscription does.
The API runs on a separate pay-as-you-go USD wallet. Free API credits stopped in February 2026.

What HeyGen actually meters
HeyGen meters one credit across every feature, converting video to credits at a rate set by the avatar engine rather than the minute.
Feature | Credits |
|---|---|
Avatar III Video Look | 4 per minute |
Avatar III Photo Look | 7 per minute |
Avatar IV Photo Look | 16 per minute |
Avatar IV Video Look | 31 per minute |
Avatar V, either look | 48 per minute |
Custom Expressive Motion | 40 per minute, on top of Avatar IV |
Video Agent, standard then Seedance | 40 then 120 per minute |
Video translation: no lipsync, Speed, Precision | 4, 6 then 10 per minute |
Upscale to 1080p then 4K | 1 then 2 per second |
Generate Look, image asset, model training | 1, 2 then 60 each |
Avatar creation bills separately from the video it appears in: 1 credit for a Look, 60 to train a custom model, with Digital Twin slots included per plan rather than charged per twin. HeyGen warns that rates and slots vary by account age and region, and says to trust the product over the table.
How credits work
Credits roll over, unlike most credit sellers here. Monthly subscribers carry unused credits into one extra cycle. Annual subscribers accumulate to renewal, though the allocation still lands monthly on the purchase anniversary rather than as a year's balance on day one. Cancelling or lapsing forfeits the lot.
Topping up depends on the plan. Business buys packs at $0.05 a credit, 100 for $5, with optional auto-reload. Pro jumps a tier. Creator can't buy credits and has to upgrade.
So a credit is worth different amounts on different plans: $0.048 on Creator, $0.049 on entry Pro, $0.043 on the 100,000-credit tier and $0.099 on Business, where $149 of plan cost carries 1,500 credits. Business top-ups at $0.05 cost half what the plan's own credits do.
HeyGen then uses "credit" for three different things. The help centre's API rate card works out at $0.05 an API credit, while the voice docs price speech in units of "1/60 credit, about $0.0167", putting an API credit at a dollar. That's a 20x gap inside HeyGen's own docs. Enterprise contracts run on a third unit again, billing Avatar IV at 0.1 credits a second where self-serve charges 31 a minute. HeyGen reconciles none of the three.
What happens when you hit the limit
Generation blocks. The API returns 402 insufficient_credit naming the balance held and the balance needed, and the free tier returns 429 quota_exceeded against its video count. Nothing half-renders and nothing bills in arrears.
Enterprise is the exception, and only on concurrency. Burst workspaces run up to 50 extra concurrent workflows at 1.5x the contract rate above the included slots, billed to the second then rounded up.
The API wallet holds its own USD balance, and its pay-as-you-go credits expire 12 months after purchase.
